Aklan Sampaguita Gardens Resort, Inc. is the brainchild of Samuel John Butcher, an American artist and creator of Precious Moments artworks that promote messages of loving, caring and sharing. Mr. Butcher, who owns Precious Moments Park in Carthage, Missouri, put his plans into action in December 2001 and in June 2003, the resort began commercial operations.
Today, Sampaguita Gardens is recognized as a landmark in the Travel & Trade Industry, and provides employment for hundreds of Aklanons as well as training opportunities for Aklanons students and those from nearby provinces.
As a boutique resort, Sampaguita Gardens’ world class amenities, facilities and services has scored many firsts, most notable of which is Jojo’s Christmas Cottage, the first all-year round Christmas store in the Philippines.

The sprawling 2.6 hectare property features 45 Guestrooms and Suites; three restaurants, namely the Poolside Pavilion Restaurant and Bar, Oriental Flavors Fine Dining Restaurant and Sir Sam’s Ristorante; it caters to business and organizations with a Convention Center; Seminar and Function Rooms and a Business Center.
There are Children’s and Adult Pools, Sammy’s Circus Rides which offers free rides for children in the local community to enjoy the carousel, mini-train and Ferris wheel from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. The resort also features a 43 Ft. Aquarium, Sammy’s Showboat which is the venue of choice for children’s parties, and Timmy’s Library which houses a treasure-trove of children’s books, art materials and an expansive film library.
Sampaguita Gardens’ amenities and facilities include Jojo’s Fitness Center and a Spa for those who want to de-stress and pampers themselves. The Spa @ Sampaguita Gardens has separate areas for men and women and both areas have four treatments rooms, a wet area with three Jacuzzis, a steam room and a wading pool each.
The Samuel J. Butcher Mansion is one of the most popular and most photographed portion of the resort, with its vast antique collection and stunning pieces of bric-a-bracs and other Orientalia such as a rare collection of Ningyo (Japanese dolls) showcasing the hierarchy of Japanese society.
The Oriental Garden is the venue of choice for civil weddings and open air receptions while the Precious Moments Gallery is a mini-museum for Sam Butcher’s artistic life. The Butterfly Farm and Gift Shop, located beside Jojo’s Christmas Cottage, features butterflies endemic to the area as well as souvenir items with a butterfly theme.
Aklan Sampaguita Gardens has won three major awards: Western Visayas’ Best Resort (Class AA) during the Regional Tourism Excellence Award 2006 from the Department of Tourism Region VI; Most Outstanding Garden Resort, Global Awards for Marketing Excellence 2005 (Symbol of Agora Excellence) by the Philippine Marketing Practitioners Association, Inc., Business Asia Magazine, the Asia-Pacific Global Awards for Marketing Excellence, Inc., and the Agora Institute for Marketing Excellence; and Most Outstanding Resort (Visayas Awards) during the 2005 Philippine Marketing Excellence Awards, an honor bestowed by the Philippine Marketing Excellence Awards Institute, the Asian Institute of Marketing and Entrepreneurship and the Marketing Insights Magazine.
